Gastroprotective effects of Methanol leaf extract of Desmodium velutinum (Fabaceae) and honey on ethanol-induced gastric ulcer in albino rat: The concept of combination therapy

Phytochemicals are known for their therapeutic effects through diverse mechanisms such as modulators, substrate ligands, receptor enzyme cofactors, enzymes precursors, toxins scavengers, microbial growth inhibitors, agents, and enhancers in the treatment of various diseases ailments. Folklorically, indigenous people Nigeria have used Desmodium velutinum (Fabaceae) disease conditions headache, fever, diarrhea toothaches, ulcers, anti-oxidants, pains. This study investigated toxicity, anti-ulcer a combination methanol leaf extract honey rats. Anti-ulcer studies were carried out using absolute ethanol rat models ulceration. The rats distributed into ten groups five each. Group 1 served negative control, group 2 positive 3 untreated test groups: 4 to 6 received crude at doses 100, 250, 500 mg/kg respectively, 7 9 ml 250 while 10 only. acute toxicity showed that caused no death mice 5000mg/kg therefore LD50 is above 5000mg/kg. result also had 42.9% 71.76 % inhibition ulceration 100% among treated with combinations. leaves exhibited gastrotherapeutic effect suggest its continued usage an antiulcer agent ulcer.
